Iran Vows to Never Halt Uranium Enrichment, Citing “Inalienable Right”
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations declared that Tehran will never abandon its uranium enrichment program, framing it as a sovereign right guaranteed under international law.
In an interview aired June 29 on CBS News, Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani was asked directly whether Iran plans to resume enriching uranium on its own soil. His answer left little room for doubt.
Quoting the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iravani said, “This is Iran’s right—an inalienable right. We intend to exercise it.” He emphasized that peaceful nuclear development, including uranium enrichment, is permitted as long as it remains within certain legal boundaries.
When the anchor suggested his remarks signaled Iran’s intent to restart or escalate its enrichment program, Iravani replied, “Uranium enrichment in Iran will never stop.”
The ambassador also responded to recent headlines in Iranian media. Asked about an editorial from the conservative newspaper Kayhan that labeled Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as a “Zionist spy” and called for him to be “dealt with,” Iravani said there was no threat to Grossi or his staff. “IAEA inspectors working in Iran are safe,” he stated.
The U.S. and Israel have long suspected that Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran maintains that its nuclear ambitions are strictly peaceful.
Prior to its recent conflict with Israel, the IAEA estimated Iran had accumulated about five metric tons of low-enriched uranium and roughly 400 kilograms enriched to 60%. In theory, uranium enriched to weapons-grade (90%) could be used to build as many as 10 nuclear bombs.
Following the 12-day conflict with Iran, U.S. and Israeli officials claimed that Tehran’s nuclear program had suffered a major setback. President Donald Trump hailed the June 22 “Operation Night Hammer” as having “wiped out” Iran’s nuclear facilities, asserting that the program had been “pushed back decades.”
But U.S. intelligence reports cited by American media suggest a more modest impact. According to preliminary assessments, the strikes likely delayed Iran’s enrichment capability by just a few months.
In a separate interview also broadcast on June 29, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said some of Iran’s nuclear sites remained functional and could resume enrichment “within months, possibly sooner.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament has escalated tensions further. On June 28, Deputy Speaker Hamid Reza Haji Babaei announced lawmakers had passed a bill to suspend cooperation with the IAEA. The measure bans Grossi from visiting key sites—particularly the underground Fordow facility—and mandates the removal of surveillance cameras.
