Israel Vows Full-Scale Ground Offensive in Gaza to “Eliminate Hamas”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that the military will launch a full-force ground operation into the Gaza Strip in the coming days, aiming to decisively defeat the militant group Hamas.
“In the coming days, our forces will enter Gaza with maximum strength to complete the mission—meaning the defeat and elimination of Hamas,” Netanyahu said in a televised statement. “There will be no scenario in which we halt this campaign. A temporary ceasefire may occur, but we are committed to seeing this through.”
Israel resumed large-scale military operations across Gaza in March after ceasefire negotiations broke down. Earlier this month, the Israeli government approved plans to expand its offensive and signaled potential long-term military presence in the territory. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed preparations for a broader campaign, which includes the planned displacement of most civilians in Gaza—a move widely condemned by the international community.
Since the conflict reignited following Hamas's October 2023 attacks, nearly all of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents have been displaced at least once.
According to a senior Israeli security official, encouraging Palestinians to leave Gaza is one of the strategic goals of the ongoing military campaign. "A voluntary relocation program will be one of the objectives,” the official said.
Several Israeli ministers have referenced a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump, which suggests that residents of Gaza voluntarily relocate to neighboring countries such as Egypt and Jordan. However, the plan has been firmly rejected by those nations, other Arab states, the broader international community, and many Palestinians themselves.
Despite that opposition, Netanyahu said Israel is actively seeking countries willing to accept Gaza residents. “We’ve established a mechanism to facilitate their departure. We just need countries willing to take them in. That’s what we’re working on,” he said. “If we give them a way out, over 50% of Gaza’s population will leave—possibly more.”
The war was sparked by a Hamas-led assault in December that killed more than 1,200 people in Israel. Since then, Israel’s retaliatory campaign has claimed nearly 53,000 lives in Gaza, the vast majority of them civilians, according to local and international monitors.
