The Israeli military has deployed tanks to the West Bank for the first time since 2005, as part of its latest offensive against Palestinian militants.
Following the ceasefire in Gaza nearly a month ago, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified raids targeting Palestinian fighters in the West Bank.
On February 23, Israeli tanks entered a refugee camp near Jenin, marking the first time in over two decades that tanks have been deployed in the region. In Tulkarem and Jenin, Israeli forces demolished dozens of homes using explosives and deployed bulldozers to clear entire areas.
Israel Plans Year-Long Military Presence in Refugee Camps
The IDF has announced plans to maintain a presence in West Bank refugee camps for the next year, escalating military operations in the region. The latest offensive, launched on February 20, follows bus bombings in Bat Yam, which Israel says were carried out by Palestinian militants.
"So far, about 40,000 Palestinians have been evacuated from the refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams. No one remains in these areas," Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated.
Katz added that he has ordered the military to prevent Palestinians from returning to these camps and to crack down on what he calls the resurgence of terrorism.
Escalating Violence in the West Bank
Violence in the West Bank has intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. The Palestinian Health Authority claims that at least 900 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces and settlers since the fighting began.
