Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for strong transatlantic security guarantees for Ukraine, insisting that a peace deal must prevent a future resurgence of war.
"Peace in Ukraine can only be achieved if Kyiv receives proper security guarantees to ensure that what we have witnessed over the past three years does not happen again," Meloni said on February 26 after meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Rome.
Meloni emphasized that security assurances must come within a "transatlantic alliance framework," referring to NATO.
"I believe this is the best way to ensure a lasting, stable peace and to prevent the tragedy of war from returning to Europe," she added.
France and UK Push for U.S. Support in European-Led Peacekeeping Mission
Meloni’s comments come as France and the UK ramp up efforts to convince U.S. President Donald Trump to include security guarantees for Ukraine in any potential peace agreement with Russia.
London and Paris are also proposing a European-led peacekeeping force of around 30,000 troops to be deployed in Ukraine once a ceasefire is reached with Moscow.
The UK and France want Trump to ensure U.S. backing—including air support, intelligence, or logistics—to assist European forces monitoring the ceasefire.
However, Trump’s recent criticism of Ukraine and his administration’s direct negotiations with Russia have raised concerns among NATO allies in Europe.
European Leaders Urgently Seek Unified Strategy
Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron convened two emergency meetings with European leaders, including Italy, to coordinate a collective response to U.S. policy shifts, strengthen Ukraine’s bargaining position, and enhance Europe’s defense capabilities.
"We must act courageously to strengthen the European pillar of the transatlantic alliance, compensating for the weakening North American pillar, because NATO remains the foundation of our security," Meloni said.
"To do this, we clearly need to spend more, but we also need the capacity to increase our defense investments."
Italy Quietly Considers Peacekeeping Deployment
According to Italian media, Meloni’s right-wing coalition government has been quietly discussing the possibility of sending Italian troops as part of a European-led peacekeeping force once the war ends.
