Joe Biden Diagnosed with Metastatic Prostate Cancer, Family Weighing Treatment Options
Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement from his office on May 18. The 82-year-old is currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.
"President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. While it is a serious and aggressive form of cancer, it appears to be hormone-sensitive, which may offer promising treatment possibilities. The President and his family are considering various treatment paths in consultation with doctors," the statement read.
Doctors discovered the tumor during a medical examination last week after Biden experienced worsening urinary symptoms. On May 16, he received a diagnosis of prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9—an indication of one of the most aggressive forms of the disease. The Gleason system rates prostate cancer severity based on cell patterns observed in biopsies, with scores ranging from 2 to 10. A score of 9 typically signals a high-grade, fast-growing cancer.
“Prostate cancer is incredibly common. As men age, almost all of them will develop some prostate cancer cells,” said Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist at Orlando Health.
Sources familiar with the matter said Biden spent the weekend at his home in Wilmington, Delaware. It remains unclear where he is currently receiving treatment.
The news has drawn an outpouring of support across the political spectrum.
"Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s medical diagnosis. We send our best wishes to Jill and the entire family and hope Joe makes a full recovery," President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on May 18.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who stepped in as a presidential candidate for the Democratic Party in 2024, expressed her sympathy, calling Biden “a fighter.”
“I know he will face this challenge with the strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We’re hoping for a complete and speedy recovery,” Harris wrote on social media.
Several members of the Trump administration and other former U.S. officials also extended their well wishes.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared that he and his wife are “praying for the Biden family.” Donald Trump Jr. reposted a message urging unity beyond politics and added, “100% agree.”
“Cancer is terrifying. My father passed away from cancer in 2021. Sending prayers to Joe Biden and his family,” wrote Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a close ally of Trump, on X.
Health concerns have followed Biden since he entered the 2024 presidential race, especially after a widely criticized debate performance against Republican candidate Donald Trump in June 2024. However, a routine checkup at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in February 2024 found no new health concerns and declared him fit for duty.
Biden’s eldest son, Beau, died of brain cancer in 2015.
