King Charles Sends Letter of Support to Biden Amid Cancer Diagnosis

Britain’s King Charles has written a personal letter to former U.S. President Joe Biden, offering words of encouragement after Biden was recently diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer, Buckingham Palace confirmed on May 19.

The letter, sent late last week, included “his best wishes” for the 82-year-old former president, who is currently weighing treatment options. Specific details of the message have not been disclosed.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed sympathy, saying he was “very sorry” to hear the news. “Wishing Joe and his family all the best for a speedy and successful recovery,” Starmer said.

King Charles and Biden have met several times in recent years. They held a bilateral meeting at the COP26 climate summit in Scotland in 2021, when Charles was still Prince of Wales. Biden also attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022, and in July 2023, shared tea with the King at Windsor Castle—a meeting the palace described as “warm and deeply personal.”

Biden had previously voiced concern following the King’s cancer diagnosis in early 2024. “Getting diagnosed, going through treatment, and surviving cancer takes hope and tremendous courage,” he said at the time.

King Charles, 76, began undergoing regular chemotherapy in February 2024, one month after his diagnosis. The royal family has not publicly disclosed the specific type of cancer.

On May 18, Biden’s office confirmed that doctors discovered a tumor during a recent exam following worsening urinary symptoms. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

On May 19, Biden thanked the public in a social media post for their support.

“Cancer can touch us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest when times are hardest. Thank you for lifting us up with your love and support,” the former president wrote.
