Kremlin Spokesperson Can't Comprehend Massive Google Fine

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the $20.6 million trillion trillion USD fine imposed on Google by a Russian court is so enormous he "can't even read it," emphasizing that the penalty is largely symbolic.

“Google should not restrict Russian media channels on their platforms, yet they continue to do so. The best course of action for Google’s leadership is to address this situation,” Peskov told reporters. The Russian court imposed the fine on Google for blocking pro-Russian accounts on YouTube over several years. The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed by 17 Russian TV channels four years ago.

Despite the massive number, Peskov reiterated that the fine is symbolic. Since the Ukraine conflict began, YouTube, owned by Google, has blocked many Russian channels, prompting fines from Moscow, though the authorities have not banned Google itself.

The lawsuit included state-run Channel One, military-affiliated Zvezda TV, and a company representing RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan. Google's Russian subsidiary declared bankruptcy in 2023, and the company ceased advertising in Russia due to Western sanctions.
