Leaders of France, UK, Germany, and Poland Make Historic Joint Visit to Ukraine

In a landmark show of solidarity, the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland are visiting Ukraine together for the first time to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky — a diplomatic move hailed as "unprecedented."

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Kyiv on May 10, marking a rare unified front by four major European powers amid ongoing efforts to end the war.

Photos shared by international media showed Macron, Merz, and Starmer traveling together aboard a special train to the Ukrainian capital. This marks Chancellor Merz’s first visit to Ukraine since taking office, while it is President Macron’s first return since June 2022, when he visited Kyiv alongside leaders of Germany and Italy shortly after the war began.

In a joint statement ahead of the visit, the four leaders called on Russia — alongside the United States — to agree to an “immediate and unconditional 30-day ceasefire” to create space for negotiations toward a just and lasting peace.

They expressed readiness to support peace talks "as soon as possible," including discussions on enforcing a ceasefire and preparing for a comprehensive peace agreement.

The leaders also pledged “steadfast commitment to Ukraine” in their planned meeting with President Zelensky. “We, the leaders of France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom, are in Kyiv today to reaffirm our unity with Ukraine and express support for President Donald Trump’s call for a negotiated peace,” the statement read.

Following their morning talks with Zelensky, the four leaders are expected to join a virtual conference to brief other European heads of state on developments.

Since President Trump took office, the U.S. has accelerated diplomatic outreach in hopes of securing a peace deal, though a breakthrough has yet to be achieved. Still, the White House has stated that negotiations are progressing and that the parties involved have reached consensus on most of the core terms of a potential agreement.
