Macron: Ceasefire in Ukraine Possible Within Weeks

French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump could play a pivotal role in the Ukraine conflict, expressing optimism that a ceasefire could be reached "within weeks."

"We want peace. Today marks three years since the war in Ukraine began, and we are committed to achieving peace," Macron said in a February 24 interview with Fox News following his meeting with Trump at the White House.

Trump’s Influence on the Ukraine War

Macron acknowledged Trump’s potential to shift the course of the war but urged caution. "I think President Trump’s involvement is a turning point. He has the power of U.S. deterrence. A ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine could be reached within weeks," he stated.

While expressing support for a ceasefire, Macron also warned that Russia had previously violated such agreements. He noted that the only direct meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took place in Paris in 2019.

Macron also emphasized that a meeting between Trump and Zelensky would be a significant step forward.

U.S.-Ukraine Mineral Deal and European Peacekeeping Plans

Macron voiced no objections to Ukraine signing a mineral deal with the U.S., saying it would symbolize Kyiv’s long-term commitment. He also stressed that "peace does not mean Ukraine's surrender."

The French president acknowledged the U.S.'s strategic interest in maintaining relations with Russia but stressed the need for Washington to support European peacekeeping efforts.

Macron revealed that he is working with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on a proposal to deploy European peacekeeping forces to Ukraine if a ceasefire is reached.

"After speaking with President Trump, I am convinced that a path forward has opened," Macron said.

Trump Confident in Ending the War

During the joint press conference, Trump expressed confidence in ending the conflict, stating that he hopes to welcome Zelensky to the White House within two weeks to sign a deal granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral resources.

"If we act wisely, we can end this within weeks. If we don't, the fighting will continue," Trump said.

Trump also claimed that Putin is open to allowing European troops in Ukraine as a security guarantee for a ceasefire agreement. However, he reiterated his stance that Europe should take primary responsibility for supporting Ukraine moving forward, and that the U.S. must recover the billions it has spent on aid to Kyiv.

Shifting U.S. Policy on Ukraine

Macron’s visit to Washington comes after Trump signaled a willingness to reestablish diplomatic ties with Russia and negotiate an end to the war without Ukraine’s involvement.

Trump’s conciliatory approach toward Russia has raised concerns that U.S. support for Ukraine—and broader European security—could be at risk.

In a significant shift in Washington’s stance, the United Nations General Assembly voted on February 24 on a resolution drafted by Ukraine and European allies, which condemned Russia for starting the war and demanded its immediate withdrawal. The U.S. voted against the resolution, siding with Russia, marking a major policy shift under Trump.
