Mexico Orders Retaliatory Tariffs Against Trump’s Trade Move

President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., responding to Trump’s 25% tax on all Mexican goods, in what appears to be the start of a trade war between the two countries.

“We Prefer Dialogue, But We Must Respond”

In a post on X on February 1, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico prefers dialogue over confrontation, but said her country had no choice but to respond in kind.

"I have instructed the economy minister to implement Plan B, including tariff and non-tariff measures to protect Mexico's interests," Sheinbaum announced, without detailing which U.S. goods would be targeted.

The U.S. is Mexico’s largest export market, while Mexico overtook China as America’s top trading partner in 2023.

Mexico’s Counter-Tariffs: What’s on the Table?

According to Reuters, Mexico has prepared tariffs ranging from 5% to 20% on U.S. imports, specifically targeting:

  • Pork
  • Cheese
  • Fresh agricultural products
  • Steel and aluminum

The auto industry, for now, is expected to be exempt from these tariffs.

U.S. trade with Mexico in 2023:

  • $322 billion in U.S. exports to Mexico
  • $475 billion in Mexican exports to the U.S.

Mexico Rejects Trump’s Fentanyl Allegations

In her February 1 statement, Sheinbaum also dismissed the White House’s claim that Mexico’s government is linked to drug cartels, calling it “a baseless smear.”

Trump justified his tariffs by blaming Mexico for failing to stop fentanyl from entering the U.S. and for what he called an uncontrolled immigration crisis.

However, Sheinbaum defended her government’s actions, noting that since taking office in October 2024, Mexico has:

  • Seized 20 million doses of fentanyl
  • Arrested over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking

With Mexico, Canada, and China all preparing countermeasures, Trump’s aggressive trade strategy is setting the stage for a major global economic clash.
