President-elect Donald Trump plans to declare a national emergency and deploy the military to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
On November 18, Trump shared a post on Truth Social by a conservative activist stating that he is "preparing to declare a national emergency and will use the military" to execute a large-scale deportation plan, with Trump responding "correct" to signal his agreement.
Throughout his campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized undocumented immigrants, accusing them of "tainting" American heritage. He has not provided detailed plans for mass deportations but has suggested invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport individuals he deems as "criminals" entering the U.S. This law was originally intended to give the government more power to regulate non-citizens during wartime. Under the act, the U.S. president has the authority to deport any male over the age of 14 from an enemy nation. Critics argue that the law is outdated, with its last use occurring during World War II.
Trump has also assembled a cabinet with hardline stances on immigration and has appointed former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Thomas Homan to oversee U.S. border control in his new administration.
During the Republican National Convention in July, Homan stated, "I have a message for the millions of illegal immigrants that President Joe Biden has allowed to remain in our country: You should start packing your bags now."
U.S. officials estimate that there are approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country, many of whom have lived in the U.S. for years. Trump’s deportation plan is expected to directly impact around 20 million families.
Many have warned that Trump's mass deportation strategy could cost the U.S. up to $300 billion. However, in a recent interview with NBC News, the President-elect declared that he is unconcerned about the expense.
