Mrs. Harris Pledges Peaceful Transition of Power to Mr. Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris Concedes Defeat in Presidential Race, Pledges Peaceful Transition of Power

"We must accept the results of this election. I have spoken with President-elect Donald Trump and congratulated him on his victory," Vice President Kamala Harris said in her speech to supporters at Howard University in Washington on the afternoon of November 6 (morning of November 7, Hanoi time).

"I also assured Donald Trump that we will assist in ensuring a peaceful transition of power," she added, her voice hoarse with emotion.

The Vice President did not mention Trump's refusal to accept defeat in the 2020 election but emphasized that those seeking public trust must respect election results. "In America, our loyalty is not to a president or a party but to the Constitution, our conscience, and our faith," she said. The crowd at Howard University cheered and applauded as Harris spoke. She urged her supporters to continue fighting for their ideals, even as she expressed disappointment with the election outcome.

"This result is not what we wanted or what we worked for, but hear me clearly: the promise of America will continue to shine as long as we never give up and keep fighting," Harris declared.

Throughout her campaign, Harris consistently described Trump as a "threat to American democracy" and revisited this theme during her speech.

"I know many feel like we are entering a dark period, but I hope that will not be the case. Even if it is, we must fill the sky with the light of countless bright stars—the light of optimism, faith, and truth," she said.

Some young women in the crowd were visibly moved to tears as Harris called on her supporters to keep advocating for reproductive rights and other campaign promises.

"To the young people watching, it’s okay to feel sad and disappointed, but believe that things will get better. Never give up. Never stop working to make the world a better place," she encouraged. "Now is not the time for discontent; it is the time to be prepared. This is the moment to continue fighting for freedom, justice, and the future we know we can build together," the Vice President stated.

"I will never give up fighting for an America where everyone can pursue their dreams, where women have the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies without government interference. We will never stop fighting to protect our schools and streets from gun violence," Kamala Harris vowed. She expressed gratitude to her family, President Joe Biden, and First Lady Jill Biden for their "trust and support." "To Tim Walz and his family, I know you will continue to serve this nation. I am proud of the 107-day campaign we just completed," she added, thanking her supporters.

Harris's speech was described by AFP as brief but powerful.

President Joe Biden later praised Harris for her "integrity and courage." "What America saw today is the Kamala Harris I know and deeply admire. She has been an incredible partner, a public servant of integrity, courage, and character," he said.

Pre-election polls indicated a tight race for the White House this year. However, the outcome was surprising in its speed, with Trump winning key battleground states such as Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan—states that President Joe Biden won in 2020.

President-elect Trump is also projected to win the popular vote. The Republican Party has secured a majority in the Senate and may gain control of the House, paving the way for Trump's agenda.

At 78, Trump becomes the first president in over a century to secure a second non-consecutive term and will be the oldest person in U.S. history to be sworn in during the January 20, 2025, inauguration ceremony. In his victory speech, Trump pledged to "make America great again."
