Luigi Mangione, the suspect accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has sparked online buzz for his stylish courtroom outfits, appearing in a bulletproof vest and polished attire.
Mangione, 26, appeared shackled in Manhattan Criminal Court over the weekend, wearing a green sweater, bulletproof vest, gray khaki pants, and brown loafers. It was his second court appearance since being charged with the December 2024 ambush killing of 50-year-old Brian Thompson, head of one of the world’s largest health insurance companies.
Within 24 hours, Google searches for "Luigi Mangione outfit" surged by 350%, with particular interest in his loafers, leading to a 1,400% spike in searches for "Luigi Mangione shoes." Social media users praised his fashion sense, with some even calling him a "style icon" despite his murder charges.
Mangione’s Fashion Impact
This isn’t the first time Mangione’s courtroom look has gone viral. During a December 23, 2024, hearing at Manhattan Supreme Court, he wore a white dress shirt layered under a burgundy sweater—a look that gained so much traction that retailers Nordstrom and Maison Margiela sold out of similar sweaters.
Mangione was arrested on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania, ending a five-day manhunt following Thompson’s broad daylight shooting on a New York City street on December 4.
Charged with murder, terrorism, illegal possession of a firearm, and identity fraud, Mangione has become a polarizing figure, drawing sympathy from some Americans. Experts attribute this to public frustration with health insurance companies accused of profiteering, as well as Mangione’s background as a former valedictorian, which has made him unexpectedly appealing to younger audiences.
By last weekend, a legal defense fund for Mangione had raised over $500,000 in donations. Through his lawyer, he released a statement thanking supporters for their letters of encouragement.
Trump Condemns Public Sympathy for Mangione
President Donald Trump condemned those who idolize Mangione, calling it "disgraceful" that some admire a "cold-blooded killer."
"It’s terrible that some people are glorifying a man who committed a brutal murder. I find it disgusting," Trump stated at a December 17, 2024, press conference.
During his December 23 court hearing, Mangione pleaded not guilty to murder and terrorism charges. The date for his next trial has not yet been set.
