NATO: No Return to ‘Business as Usual’ With Russia After Ukraine War Ends

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Tuesday the alliance will not normalize relations with Russia even after the war in Ukraine ends, warning that Moscow remains a long-term threat.

“That’s not going to happen. It will take decades before we can consider normalizing relations with Russia again, because trust is completely gone,” Rutte said during a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw. “The threat from Russia remains—even after the war ends.”

He added that all 32 NATO allies are united in viewing Moscow as “the most immediate and significant threat to our security.”

“With Russia’s latest missile technology, the difference between an attack on Warsaw or an attack on Madrid is only about 10 minutes,” Rutte warned.

Prime Minister Tusk echoed concerns that any potential peace deal negotiated between the U.S. and Russia could come at the expense of NATO’s eastern members, particularly Poland and the Baltic states. These countries fear that if Russia is granted concessions, President Vladimir Putin could use the pause to rebuild his forces and threaten the region again in the years to come.

Rutte emphasized NATO’s commitment to defending all members of the alliance.

“If anyone miscalculates and thinks they can get away with attacking Poland—or any other NATO ally—they will be met with the full force of this powerful alliance. Our response would be devastating,” he said. “President Putin, and anyone thinking of attacking us, must understand that clearly.”

The Kremlin has not responded to Rutte’s comments.

Rutte’s visit to Poland comes as the U.S. seeks to broker an end to the war in Ukraine through direct talks with Moscow—without formal European involvement. President Donald Trump reportedly told Rutte during a recent White House meeting that he does not believe any peace deal would embolden Russia to attack other countries.
