North Korea announced it had conducted an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test on October 31, aiming to strengthen its nuclear deterrent. State media KCNA reported that leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the "significant" launch, which he called a warning to North Korea's adversaries, emphasizing the country's commitment to expanding its nuclear arsenal.
While KCNA claimed the missile set new records, no specific details were disclosed. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) detected the launch from near Pyongyang into the eastern sea, identifying it as a long-range, solid-fuel missile. The missile landed about 200 km west of Japan's Okushiri Island.
Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani noted it traveled around 1,000 km over 86 minutes, reaching a record altitude of over 7,000 km. JCS spokesperson Lee Sung Joon indicated the missile was launched at a steep angle, a strategy North Korea uses to minimize distance and prevent other nations from recovering debris.
The missile was reportedly fired from a 12-axle launcher, the largest seen in North Korea, sparking speculation of a new, more powerful ICBM. The U.S., Japan, and South Korea condemned the launch as a violation of UN resolutions and a threat to regional stability. U.S. National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett accused North Korea of unnecessarily escalating tensions.
North Korea defended the test, claiming it was a response to perceived regional threats. Despite advances, experts argue Pyongyang still lacks the technology to reliably strike the U.S. mainland, particularly in ensuring missile re-entry survival.
