About one-third of the Government Efficiency Office (DOGE) staff has resigned, citing opposition to Elon Musk’s influence and the agency’s direction, vowing not to carry out policies they believe endanger the country.
"We committed to serving the American people and upholding our oath to the Constitution under multiple administrations. However, it is now clear that we can no longer fulfill that commitment," wrote 21 DOGE employees in a letter to White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles, released on February 25.
These employees, who originally worked for the U.S. Digital Service (USDS) before President Donald Trump rebranded the agency as DOGE, represent about one-third of its workforce.
Elon Musk’s Role in Restructuring the Agency
Billionaire Elon Musk, a close adviser to Trump, has played a key role in overhauling DOGE, deploying a loyalist team across the government to slash jobs and cut spending.
Musk dismissed the resignations, stating that the 21 employees were holdovers from the previous administration who worked remotely and refused to return to the office despite Trump’s mandate.
"If they hadn’t resigned, they would have been fired anyway," Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Staff Complaints About Political Loyalty Tests and Firings
The resigning employees described a chaotic transition, starting on January 21, when they were subjected to abrupt interviews by individuals wearing White House visitor badges.
These interviews allegedly questioned employees about their political loyalty, sought to divide staff, and revealed limited technical expertise among the interviewers.
Tensions escalated further on February 14, when one-third of USDS employees were terminated via email.
The employees affected had worked on modernizing key government services, including:
-
Social Security
-
Veterans’ benefits
-
Tax filing systems
-
Public healthcare services
-
Disaster relief platforms
Resigning Employees Warn of Security and Service Risks
"Firing these employees puts millions of Americans at risk, as they rely on these services every day," the letter stated.
"The sudden loss of highly skilled tech experts weakens critical systems and makes American data less secure."
The resigning staff accused DOGE leadership of pursuing "efforts to undermine core government systems, compromise sensitive American data, and dismantle essential public services."
Concerns Over Mass Government Layoffs
USDS was originally founded in 2014 under President Barack Obama to improve the federal government’s digital infrastructure.
The DOGE resignations come amid growing fears of mass firings across the federal workforce.
Recently, two million U.S. government employees received emails demanding detailed explanations of their work performance—with warnings of potential job cuts.
On February 24, federal agencies advised employees to ignore the emails or downplay the risks of non-compliance.
Meanwhile, U.S. media reports suggest that DOGE engineers are developing new software to automate large-scale federal layoffs.
