More than 74 million Americans across the country have already voted early for the presidential election ahead of November 5.
This year has seen record-breaking early voter turnout in several states. North Carolina has reported 4.5 million early voters, even as the state recovers from Hurricane Helene. Georgia has also set a new record, with 4 million early votes cast.
In Pennsylvania, around 1.7 million people have submitted early mail-in ballots, despite ongoing heated debates about the processing of these votes. Altogether, nine states have recorded that more than 50% of eligible voters have already cast their ballots. As of November 3, the nationwide total of early votes stands at over 74 million out of approximately 244 million registered voters.
Recent polls indicate a tight race between candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, with the outcome likely to be decided by seven battleground states: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, and North Carolina. Early voting has long been a feature in the U.S., particularly for military personnel and those unable to visit polling stations on Election Day. In 2020, early voting saw a significant increase due to relaxed rules in many states amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to early voting data reported by the Associated Press, as of November 3, Democratic candidate Harris is leading in Pennsylvania, while Trump holds the advantage in Arizona, Nevada, and North Carolina. Data from the remaining battleground states does not yet specify voter preferences for each candidate.
On Election Day, November 5, the remaining 170 million eligible voters will head to the polls to decide whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will become the 47th President of the United States.
