Poland Seeks U.S. Nuclear Deployment on Its Soil
Poland’s President Andrzej Duda has called on the United States to deploy nuclear warheads in the country, arguing it would strengthen security for the entire NATO alliance.
"NATO’s borders have shifted eastward since 1999. It has been 26 years, and now NATO’s infrastructure should also move east. I think this is obvious," Duda said in an interview with Financial Times on March 12.
He suggested that relocating U.S. nuclear weapons from Western Europe or the U.S. to Poland is not only timely but also enhances NATO's overall security. Duda also revealed that he had discussed this possibility with Keith Kellogg, President Donald Trump’s special envoy on Ukraine.
In 2022, Duda had previously proposed a nuclear-sharing initiative to the Biden administration, but the request was denied.
U.S. Nuclear Weapons in Poland? A Provocation to Russia?
Poland joined NATO in March 1999, but Washington has long been hesitant about deploying nuclear weapons in the country, fearing it would be a major provocation against Moscow.
"Russia deployed nuclear weapons to Belarus without asking anyone for permission," Duda argued, referring to President Vladimir Putin’s decision to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus two years ago.
The Kremlin has not yet commented on Poland’s request.
Poland’s Growing Interest in Nuclear Deterrence
Polish leaders have been increasingly vocal about their desire to access nuclear weapons.
On March 7, Prime Minister Donald Tusk told the Polish parliament that his government was engaged in serious discussions with France about nuclear deterrence cooperation. He stressed that Poland must acquire cutting-edge capabilities related to nuclear and non-conventional weapons.
Duda acknowledged that it would take decades for Poland to develop its own nuclear capabilities, but he emphasized Trump’s commitment to maintaining a U.S. military presence in the country.
"Concerns that the U.S. will withdraw its troops from Poland are unfounded. We are a reliable ally of the U.S., and they have strategic interests here," he stated.
Poland’s Military Expansion
The Polish Armed Forces are now the third-largest military in NATO, after the United States and Turkey, and the largest among the 27-member European Union (EU).
Poland plans to spend 4.7% of its GDP on defense in 2024, the highest percentage in NATO. Prime Minister Tusk is pushing for an increase to 5%, aligning with Trump’s recent call for higher defense spending among NATO members.
