Pope Leo XIV to Be Installed Today in Historic Vatican Ceremony
Tens of thousands are expected to gather in St. Peter’s Square today as Pope Leo XIV officially begins his papacy with an installation Mass at the Vatican, marking a historic moment for the Catholic Church.
The ceremony is set to begin at 10 a.m. local time and will last approximately three hours. It will feature the traditional rites that inaugurate a new pope’s ministry, including the presentation of the Fisherman’s Ring and the Pallium, both symbols of the pontiff’s spiritual and administrative authority.
Pope Leo XIV, 69, will also deliver his first homily as pontiff, expected to outline key themes and priorities for his papal mission.
The event will draw a wide array of global dignitaries. U.S. Vice President JD Vance will lead the American delegation, accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Other world leaders attending include the Presidents of Israel, Nigeria, Peru, and Ukraine, as well as the Prime Ministers of Italy, Canada, Australia, and Germany. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will also be present.
European royalty will be in attendance, including King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, and Prince Edward, representing King Charles III of the United Kingdom. Russia’s Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova will head her country's delegation.
Pope Leo XIV was elected by the College of Cardinals on May 8, following the passing of Pope Francis. He becomes the 267th pope in Catholic history—and the first American ever to hold the position.
Before his election, he spent much of his career as a missionary in South America. From 2015 to 2023, he served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in northern Peru, a country where he also obtained citizenship after naturalizing in 2015. In addition to his Peruvian ties, he holds U.S. citizenship and is widely regarded as a bridge between the global South and the Western Church.
