President Biden Believes He Could Have Defeated Trump If He Stayed in the Race

President Joe Biden expressed confidence that he could have defeated Donald Trump and secured reelection if he had not withdrawn from the presidential race last year.

In an interview with USA Today on January 8, when asked if he believed he could have beaten Donald Trump in the November election, Biden responded, "Yes, I do."

"I genuinely believe I was the person best positioned to defeat him. But I also didn’t want to be serving as president at 85 or 86 years old. So, I passed the torch," Biden added.

At 82, Biden admitted uncertainty about whether he could fully serve another term. "Who knows? Right now, I feel fine. But who knows how I’ll feel at 86?" he said.

Biden’s health and age were subjects of scrutiny during his campaign for the White House. He withdrew from the race and handed the baton to Vice President Kamala Harris in July last year, following a debate performance widely viewed as underwhelming against Trump.

When asked about regrets from his four years in the White House, Biden didn’t mention the debate, his decision to break his promise to serve only one term, or his role as a "bridge" to the next generation.

Instead, he lamented the spread of misinformation, highlighting false claims propagated by Trump and others about two recent attacks in the U.S., as well as the slow pace of infrastructure projects.

"I think we could have done a lot better if we had worked harder to get some of these projects operational sooner," he said.

Biden confirmed that he is considering pardoning individuals who may come under scrutiny from Trump and his Republican allies but stated that he has not yet made a decision.

He added that during a meeting with President-elect Trump in the Oval Office in November 2024, he advised against pursuing political vendettas. According to Biden, Trump listened but did not respond.

Reflecting on his legacy, Biden said he hopes to be remembered for his efforts to rebuild the economy in the wake of the pandemic and restore America's global leadership.

"That’s my hope. I want history to say that I did it with honesty and integrity, that I spoke my mind," Biden said.
