President Joe Biden delivered a speech at the White House Rose Garden at 11:25 AM today, marking his first public address since Republican candidate Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race.
The event was delayed by 25 minutes. President Biden briskly walked to the podium amid applause from attendees in the Rose Garden, repeatedly expressing his thanks as cheers erupted.
"Yesterday, I spoke with President-elect Trump, congratulated him on his victory, and assured him that I have directed my entire administration to cooperate with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transfer of power. That is what the American people deserve," President Biden stated. He also mentioned calling Vice President Kamala Harris, emphasizing that she should be proud of her campaign.
"My hope is that regardless of who we voted for, we do not see each other as enemies, but as fellow Americans. We need to lower the temperature," President Biden urged.
The President expressed optimism that Trump’s election for a second term would help dispel doubts about the U.S. electoral process. "I also hope we can put to rest any questions about the integrity of our electoral system. It is honest, fair, transparent, and trustworthy, win or lose," he declared.
President Biden emphasized the need to restore respect for election workers, calling them "individuals who have worked tirelessly and taken risks."
"We should thank them for staffing polling stations, counting ballots, and safeguarding the integrity of our elections. Many of them are volunteers driven by their love for this country. They did their civic duty, and I will do mine as president. I will honor my oath and uphold the Constitution. On January 20, 2025, we will have a peaceful transfer of power," he pledged.
President Biden promised to continue working diligently in his final weeks in office and urged his supporters to do the same. "Together, we have changed America for the better. Now, we have 74 days left. Let's make each day count. That is our duty to the American people," he said. "Setbacks are inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable. We may stumble, but as my father said, the measure of a person is how quickly they get back up. Losing one battle does not mean we are defeated. We lost this round. The America we dream of is calling us to rise again," he concluded.
The speech lasted about six minutes. President Biden then left the podium, blowing kisses to the audience before heading inside. According to AFP, President Biden appeared determined to draw a stark contrast with Trump, who refused to accept defeat in the 2020 election.
President Biden spoke with Trump on November 6, "expressing his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition of power" and inviting the President-elect to the White House.
Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign spokesperson, stated that the President-elect "looks forward to the upcoming meeting." This will be the first face-to-face encounter between the two since their debate at the end of June.
Donald Trump was elected president following the November 5 election, securing victories across key battleground states. He is the first U.S. president in a century to serve two non-consecutive terms. In his speech to supporters early on November 6, Trump declared he had "made history."
Vice President Harris conceded defeat on the afternoon of November 6, pledging a peaceful transfer of power.
