President Biden Pardons His Son

President Joe Biden signed an executive order pardoning his son, Hunter Biden, in the final days of his term, asserting that the charges against Hunter were politically motivated.

"Anyone with a conscience can see that Hunter was targeted simply because he is my son, and that is wrong," President Biden said in a statement on December 1. "There has been a deliberate effort to break Hunter. Despite relentless attacks and selective prosecution, Hunter has been sober for five and a half years. This targeting goes beyond him—it’s aimed at me as well. Enough is enough," Biden declared.

This decision marks a reversal of the president's previous stance, as the White House had consistently stated that Biden would not pardon his son. The pardon spares Hunter from potential prison time related to charges involving firearms and taxes, just weeks before his sentencing.

On June 11, a federal jury in Wilmington, Delaware, convicted Hunter of three serious charges stemming from his purchase of a handgun while addicted to drugs in 2018. He was scheduled for sentencing on December 12. In September, Hunter also admitted to all nine charges related to evading $1.4 million in taxes, while spending significant sums on drugs, sex workers, and luxury items.

Hunter Biden, 54, is the only surviving son of President Biden following the death of his elder son, Beau Biden, from brain cancer in 2015. Hunter has a diverse professional background, including founding consulting and investment firms, working in private equity, and serving on various boards, including companies in China and Ukraine.

Since 2019, former President Donald Trump and Republican allies have repeatedly attacked Hunter over his business dealings in Ukraine and China. President Biden has consistently defended his son, calling the allegations "a political smear." Biden revealed that he made the decision to pardon Hunter over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which the family spent in Nantucket, Massachusetts, before returning to Washington on November 30.

"This is the truth: I believe in our justice system, but I also believe that politics has tainted this process, leading to a miscarriage of justice," Biden said. "I hope the American people understand why a father and a president would make this decision."
