President Biden's Immigrant Protection Program Fails

A federal judge in Texas has blocked President Biden’s program aimed at granting citizenship to undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens.

The "Keeping Families Together" program, introduced by President Joe Biden in June and implemented in August, sought to streamline and simplify the process for approximately 500,000 undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens to obtain American citizenship.

However, on November 8, federal judge J. Campbell Barker in Texas issued a ruling halting the program, citing that it exceeded President Biden’s executive authority. This move is seen as a major setback for the President and may result in the program being frozen during the final months of his term.

Judge Barker initially suspended the program in mid-August, only days after it was launched, to evaluate a legal challenge brought forward by Texas and a coalition of states with Republican attorneys general. White House spokesperson Angelo Hernandez stated on November 8 that the Biden administration disagrees with the ruling and is considering next steps. "As the President has said, America does not separate families," Hernandez remarked.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton praised Judge Barker’s decision, calling it a victory against the Biden administration’s “radical efforts” to undermine the U.S. border and weaken the rule of law. Judge Barker was appointed by former President Trump during his first term.

Undocumented immigration in the U.S. has been a highly contentious issue and a key concern for voters during presidential elections.

Republican candidate Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 election and is expected to launch a sweeping crackdown on undocumented immigrants, potentially reversing his predecessor’s initiative. President-elect Trump has labeled the program a "mass amnesty policy" that encourages illegal immigration.

For many Americans, immigration is seen as one of the most pressing issues for Trump to address upon taking office in January 2025. According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, a majority of voters believe he will order the mass deportation of people living illegally in the United States.
