President Biden and former President Trump met for the first time at the White House since the election to discuss the upcoming transition of power.
"President-elect, former President Donald, congratulations and welcome back," President Joe Biden said to Donald Trump as they began their meeting in the Oval Office at the White House on November 13.
Trump expressed his gratitude, responding, "Politics is tough and sometimes not pretty." "But today is a beautiful day, and I greatly appreciate this," Trump added as the two shook hands. President Biden also assured that the transition of power would be smooth, pledging to facilitate the process as his predecessor and successor prepares to take over the White House in January 2025.
Trump expressed his appreciation for the pledge and emphasized that the transition would be "as smooth as possible."
This meeting was a stark contrast to the harsh criticisms the two had directed at each other over the years. Biden, 81, had previously described Trump as a "threat to democracy," while the President-elect, 78, often referred to his successor and predecessor as "incompetent."
Trump also made false claims of election fraud after losing the 2020 presidential race to Biden.
The Oval Office meeting is a traditional gesture between the outgoing and incoming U.S. presidents, marking the start of a peaceful transition of power. However, in 2020, after his defeat, Trump did not host Biden at the White House but left a letter in the Resolute Desk drawer in the Oval Office instead.
Following the media's announcement of Trump's victory in the recent presidential race, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris extended their congratulations to him, committing to a peaceful transition of power on January 20 of the following year.
Trump is also gradually assembling his new cabinet, announcing nominees for roles such as Chief of Staff, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Homeland Security, and positions focused on immigration issues. He has also selected billionaire Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a government waste reduction agency.
