President-elect Donald Trump Jokingly Refers to PM Trudeau as 'Governor of Canada'

President-elect Donald Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the "Governor of the state of Canada," joking that the country could become the 51st state of the United States.

"It was great having dinner recently with Governor Justin Trudeau of the state of Canada. I’m looking forward to meeting with the Governor again soon to further negotiate on tariffs and trade. The results will definitely interest everyone!" Trump wrote on Truth Social on December 10.

When asked about the remark, Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung simply responded, "It’s a good one!" Trudeau's office has not commented on the statement.

Trump has recently joked that Canada should become America’s 51st state and repeated the quip during his meeting with Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago in late November, according to Fox News. In an appearance on NBC last week, Trump raised the idea again while discussing his plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico as part of his strategy to "make America richer."

"We're essentially subsidizing Canada by over $100 billion a year and Mexico by almost $300 billion a year. Why are we doing that? Why should we subsidize them? If we're going to keep subsidizing them, they might as well become a U.S. state," Trump said, framing the trade deficits with Canada and Mexico as a form of "subsidy."

The president-elect has vowed to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico on his first day in office. He stated that the tariffs would remain in place until both countries take stronger action to curb drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, and address illegal immigration across the U.S. border.

Some observers speculate that Trump’s remarks might be a negotiating tactic or an opening salvo in future trade discussions. However, four days after Trump’s comments, Trudeau traveled to Florida to meet with the president-elect. Following the meeting, Trudeau described their conversation as "excellent" but declined to answer further questions.
