President-elect Donald Trump Selects Controversial Ally as Attorney General

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Congressman Matt Gaetz, 42, for the role of U.S. Attorney General, marking one of his most contentious appointments.

"I am honored to nominate Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz as the United States Attorney General. Matt is a skilled and relentless attorney, a graduate of the William & Mary Law School, who has made a notable impact in Congress by focusing on much-needed reforms at the Department of Justice," Trump announced on November 13.

Trump emphasized that Congressman Gaetz would put an end to the "weaponization of government" and restore the American people's trust in the Department of Justice, which he claimed has been severely eroded. "Few issues are more critical than ending the weaponization of our justice system," the President-elect added. Gaetz, a staunch ally of Trump, expressed his honor in accepting the new role. As Attorney General-designate, Gaetz must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before assuming office in Trump's cabinet.

Members of both the Republican and Democratic parties quickly voiced skepticism about Gaetz's potential Senate confirmation. Senator Thom Tillis, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, highlighted "significant disagreements" between Gaetz and many senators, alluding to his involvement in the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

The AFP news agency characterized Matt Gaetz as one of Trump's most divisive picks.

Gaetz has been under scrutiny by law enforcement during an investigation into his associate Joel Greenberg, a former tax collector sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2022 for crimes including sex trafficking of a minor. The U.S. Department of Justice also investigated Gaetz for alleged involvement in sex trafficking and obstruction of justice.

Gaetz has denied all allegations and stated late last year that no charges had been brought against him, although he remains under House ethics investigation.

On the same day, President-elect Trump nominated Tulsi Gabbard, 43, as Director of National Intelligence (DNI). "I am confident that Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her distinguished career to our intelligence community, protecting constitutional rights and ensuring 'peace through strength,'" Trump declared.

Gabbard, a former Army National Guard officer, ran for president as a Democrat in 2020 but did not succeed. In 2022, she announced her departure from the Democratic Party and supported Trump's campaign, later joining his transition team.
