President-elect Trump Announces First Appointee for New Administration

President-elect Donald Trump has selected Susie Wiles, a senior campaign advisor, to serve as his Chief of Staff during his second term.

"Susie is tough, smart, creative, and admired and respected by everyone," President-elect Trump announced on November 7, referring to Susie Wiles, who managed his campaign. "Susie will continue to work tirelessly to make America great again. It is a tremendous honor for Susie to become the first female Chief of Staff in U.S. history."

The Chief of Staff position, often the first appointment a president-elect announces, oversees all daily policies and operations of the White House. It does not require Senate confirmation. Wiles, 67, is one of Trump’s longest-serving advisors. Along with Chris LaCivita, she co-managed Trump’s campaign, described as the "brains" behind his victory. Both Wiles and LaCivita are known for maintaining a low public profile.

"I am deeply grateful to Susie and Chris for the work you have done. Come here, Susie," Trump said during his victory speech on the morning of November 6 in Florida, shortly after his election win. "Susie prefers to stay behind the scenes, but let me tell you, we call her the 'Ice Queen.'"

Wiles began her political career in 1979 as an aide to Republican Congressman Jack Kemp. A year later, she joined the campaign that propelled Ronald Reagan to become the 40th President of the United States.

She is a prominent Republican strategist in Florida, having managed Trump’s campaigns in the state in 2016 and 2020. Before that, she led Rick Scott’s successful gubernatorial campaign in Florida in 2010 and managed former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman’s presidential bid in 2012.

During Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021, he changed his Chief of Staff several times, with Reince Priebus, John Kelly, Mick Mulvaney, and Mark Meadows each holding the position. Among them, one was fired via Twitter, two have since become vocal critics of Trump, and Meadows has faced indictment over allegations related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
