President-elect Trump Hints at Possibility of a Third Term Run

President-elect Donald Trump suggested that he might consider running for a third term—something that is unconstitutional in the U.S.—if Republican lawmakers push for it.

"I don’t think I will run again unless you say, 'This man is incredible, we have to figure out a way,'" Trump stated during a meeting with Republican lawmakers at a hotel in Washington, D.C., on November 13.

This marked the first time Trump mentioned the prospect of a third term since winning a second term as president. He is the first U.S. president in over a century to hold two non-consecutive terms.

However, in practice, Trump cannot run again for a third term, as the U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two terms in office. For him to pursue another term, a constitutional amendment would be necessary, which is considered nearly impossible in the current political climate.

Trump began his speech to the group of Republican lawmakers by boasting about his victories in key battleground states over Vice President Kamala Harris. He also highlighted states traditionally seen as Democratic strongholds that shifted their support to the Republican Party.

"We won all seven battleground states by a significant margin," he said. The President-elect noted that if Republicans could increase their margins slightly beyond the current results in the next election, they might even flip traditionally Democratic states such as New Jersey, New York, and California.

A source familiar with the meeting indicated that Trump also joked with Republican members about being unable to "shake off" billionaire Elon Musk.

"He loves Mar-a-Lago," Trump said of the tech mogul, whom he recently appointed to lead the Government Efficiency Board just a day prior.

During a closed-door meeting of Republican lawmakers before Trump's arrival, House Speaker Mike Johnson referred to the President-elect as "the returning king," according to an attendee.

"We have followed in his footsteps. His influence is immense," Johnson remarked.

Following his meeting with the Republican lawmakers, Trump was scheduled to visit the White House to discuss the transition of power with President Joe Biden. Melania Trump, the President-elect’s wife, did not attend the event, despite having been invited by First Lady Jill Biden.
