President Joe Biden May Have Cleared the Use of Long-Range Weapons for Ukraine

U.S. media reports indicate that President Joe Biden has allowed Ukraine to use long-range weapons to strike deep within Russian territory, marking a significant shift in policy.

According to unnamed U.S. officials cited by Reuters on November 17, the Biden administration has given Ukraine the green light to utilize U.S.-supplied long-range weapons to target sites deep in Russia. The first strike could happen in the coming days using ATACMS ballistic missiles, which have a maximum range of 300 km.

The Washington Post and AFP have reported similar developments.

“Several media outlets have suggested we’ve been authorized to take appropriate actions. However, strikes are not carried out through words,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a speech that evening, adding that “missiles will speak for themselves.” The White House and U.S. State Department have declined to comment.

Officials from President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team did not respond to questions about whether he and his advisors were briefed on this decision, which could have major implications for the ongoing conflict.

“President Trump has consistently asserted that he is the only one capable of bringing both sides to the negotiating table and working towards an end to the conflict and suffering,” said Steven Cheung, the communications director for Trump’s transition team.

The Kremlin and Russia’s Ministry of Defense have yet to comment on these reports.

Vladimir Dzhabarov, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council’s Foreign Affairs Committee, warned that the U.S. move could escalate into World War III. Andrei Klishas, a senior member of the Federation Council, stated that the West’s escalation “could lead to the complete collapse of the Ukrainian state the next day.”

The White House and State Department have refrained from further comments.

Officials from President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team also did not respond to inquiries about whether they were informed in advance of such a significant decision affecting the conflict.

“President Trump has maintained that he is uniquely positioned to bring both sides to the table for a peace settlement and an end to the suffering,” Steven Cheung reiterated on behalf of Trump’s transition team.

Neither the Kremlin nor Russia’s Ministry of Defense has issued a statement regarding the reports.
