On November 4, Ukraine’s General Staff reported that Russian forces had launched 2,023 long-range Geran suicide drones and another unidentified type in October, nearly three times the 700 drones launched in September. Of these, Ukrainian air defenses shot down 1,185 drones, while 29 flew out of Ukraine's controlled airspace. Since the beginning of 2024, Russia has deployed 6,987 drones, primarily targeting critical infrastructure.
In a meeting with Acting Air Force Commander Anatoliy Kryvonozhko, President Zelensky emphasized the significant increase in Geran drones and urged the Ukrainian military to enhance defenses around key areas, increase mobile air defense units, and develop counter-UAV measures.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on these claims and typically does not disclose the number of drones or missiles used in attacks on Ukraine. Ukrainian military analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko noted that Russia has recently increased the use of drones and decoys while reducing expensive cruise missile launches. In October, Russia launched 84 missiles, half of the 151 used in September, with Ukrainian defenses downing only 15 missiles compared to 48 the previous month.
Kovalenko added that Russia did not conduct large-scale coordinated missile attacks in October but instead carried out isolated strikes using Kh-59/69 cruise missiles and Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles. He also warned that the absence of launches from missiles like the Iskander-K or Kalibr may indicate Russia is stockpiling them for significant winter offensives.
Both Russia and Ukraine have continued to strike each other’s military bases and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials have admitted that defense facilities are among Russia's targets but often withhold specific details.
