Prime Minister Carney: Trump No Longer Interested in Making Canada the 51st State
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said former U.S. President Donald Trump is no longer pursuing the idea of annexing Canada as America's 51st state.
When asked during the NATO summit in the Netherlands whether Trump still harbored ambitions to merge Canada into the United States, Carney replied, “No, he’s no longer talking about it.”
“He’s actually been complimentary of Canada,” Carney said. “Maybe at one point he had that desire, but not anymore.”
This isn’t the first time the topic of annexation has been publicly dismissed. On May 22, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Peter Hoekstra said Trump “is no longer entertaining the idea of turning Canada into the 51st state,” despite the former president posting just days later on social media that Canada should join the U.S. to benefit from his proposed missile defense network.
Carney, who began his new term by strengthening ties with European partners like the UK and France and forging new security collaborations with Australia—including a joint Arctic radar project—has repeatedly stated that the longstanding, close partnership between Ottawa and Washington is "over."
Still, Carney acknowledged that Trump’s influence did push Canada to boost its defense spending, helping to meet NATO’s funding commitments.
“President Trump is reshaping many of America’s bilateral relationships,” Carney said. “We’re all members of NATO. He wants every member, including Canada, to contribute fairly—and I believe we’re doing that.”
On foreign policy, Carney said Trump has shown “decisive leadership” in the Middle East. While long-term peace remains the goal, Trump’s immediate focus has been on securing basic outcomes like ceasefires, restoring humanitarian aid, and ensuring the release of all hostages in Gaza.
“He’s used his personal influence and the power of the United States in ways that have clearly moved things forward,” Carney said. “What we’ve seen in Iran recently was a difficult but necessary action that moved the region closer to stability.”
Carney also praised Iran’s “measured and calculated” response after U.S. airstrikes targeted three of its nuclear facilities.
“In truth, their military response looked more like a diplomatic message,” Carney said. “Canada doesn’t support conflict of any kind, but Iran’s limited and pre-announced retaliation showed a clear intent to de-escalate. That’s something we can acknowledge.”
