Putin’s Advisor Rejects U.S.-Proposed 30-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine

A top Kremlin advisor has dismissed the U.S.-backed 30-day ceasefire proposal, arguing it only serves to give Ukrainian forces time to regroup and insisting Russia seeks a long-term peace agreement instead.

"A 30-day ceasefire does nothing for Russia. It merely provides the Ukrainian military with an opportunity to rest, reorganize, and strengthen itself for future actions," said Yuri Ushakov, foreign policy advisor to President Vladimir Putin, during a televised interview on March 12, following a call with U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.

Ushakov reaffirmed Moscow’s stance that any long-term peace agreement must address Russia’s strategic interests and concerns. He also stated that both Russia and the U.S. agree NATO should not be involved in any peace settlement regarding Ukraine’s future.

The Kremlin official criticized the timing of the ceasefire proposal, emphasizing that Russian forces currently have momentum on the battlefield. He suggested the offer was hastily made and would not be beneficial in the long run.

"I don’t think anyone needs a symbolic peace gesture at this moment. President Putin will provide a more thorough and substantive response soon," Ushakov said, implying that Moscow is unlikely to accept the ceasefire plan endorsed by Washington and Kyiv.

Russia Warns Against Western Peacekeeping Troops in Ukraine

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova strongly rejected any idea of Western peacekeeping troops being deployed in Ukraine, calling it "completely unacceptable."

"Any foreign military presence in Ukraine, regardless of its stated purpose, would mean direct military confrontation with Russia. We will respond with all available means," Zakharova warned.

Her statement came after France and the UK suggested deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine following a potential ceasefire agreement, an idea Moscow has consistently opposed.

Zelensky Calls for Stronger U.S. Pressure on Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Russia for failing to provide a meaningful response to the ceasefire proposal.

"This once again proves that Russia seeks to prolong the conflict and delay peace as much as possible. We hope U.S. pressure will be enough to force Moscow to end the fighting," Zelensky wrote on social media.

After high-level talks in Saudi Arabia on March 11, the U.S. and Ukraine jointly announced that Kyiv was "ready to accept a preliminary ceasefire" based on Washington’s initiative. The 30-day truce would take effect immediately if Russia agreed and could be extended further.

President Zelensky stressed Ukraine’s serious commitment to the ceasefire and reaffirmed Kyiv’s willingness to halt hostilities for the proposed 30-day period.

Ukraine has also called for European allies to send military forces after the war ends to safeguard against future conflicts.
