Putin Congratulates Trump, Expresses Readiness for Dialogue

President Vladimir Putin praised Donald Trump's courageous actions during an assassination attempt, congratulated him on his victory, and expressed Moscow's willingness to engage in dialogue with Washington.

"On this occasion, I extend my congratulations to him," Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 7 in Sochi, referring to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Putin further noted that Trump "acted correctly, bravely, like a true man" during the assassination attempt in July.

Trump is set to assume office in January 2025, succeeding Joe Biden and becoming the 47th president of the United States. According to Putin, Trump's campaign remarks about ending the Ukraine conflict and restoring relations with Russia deserve attention. Trump had claimed that if re-elected, he could bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours, though he did not specify a detailed plan. The Kremlin welcomed Trump's proposal but added that "only time will tell" if the future U.S. president would act on his statements.

"I don’t know what will happen. I have no clue at all," the Kremlin chief said when asked about Trump's potential second term in office. "For him, this is his final term as president. What he does is up to him."

Trump previously served as president from 2017 to 2021. The U.S. Constitution stipulates that a president cannot serve more than two terms, regardless of whether they are consecutive.

When asked if Trump might seek a meeting, President Putin stated that he was ready to reestablish contact if the Trump administration wanted to and was open to negotiations with the U.S. president-elect.

Meanwhile, President-elect Trump, in a November 7 interview with NBC News, said he had spoken with around 70 world leaders since the morning of November 6 but not with Putin. "I think we will talk," Trump said.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that President Putin could have a phone call with President-elect Trump before the January 20, 2025, inauguration, though Russia would not initiate the call.
