Putin Tells Trump Russia Won’t Back Down in Ukraine, But Open to Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone call that Moscow remains committed to achieving its objectives in Ukraine but is willing to continue peace negotiations, according to a Kremlin readout released Tuesday.

The nearly one-hour call—focused largely on the war in Ukraine and Middle East tensions—marked the sixth conversation between the two leaders since Trump returned to the White House in January.

“President Putin made clear that Russia will not abandon its goals in Ukraine, which include eliminating the root causes of the conflict,” said Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s top foreign policy adviser. “Russia will achieve the objectives it has set for this special military operation.”

Despite that stance, Putin reportedly told Trump that Moscow remains open to a third round of direct peace talks with Kyiv. He also briefed Trump on the status of agreements previously discussed between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Turkey.

While the Kremlin characterized Trump as expressing a desire to see the fighting end swiftly, neither side brought up Washington’s recent decision to suspend key arms shipments to Ukraine—an announcement that has drawn concern from Kyiv and fueled speculation about America’s long-term military commitment.

On the Middle East, Putin reiterated Russia’s position that regional conflicts should be resolved through diplomacy. “We emphasized the need for all disputes and crises to be addressed through political and diplomatic means,” Ushakov said.

The two leaders also expressed mutual interest in expanding joint economic projects, especially in energy and space cooperation.

The White House has not yet released its own account of the call.

The conversation comes just two days after the Trump administration confirmed it would halt the delivery of several high-priority weapons systems previously promised to Ukraine. Though specific items were not disclosed, reports suggest the freeze could include Patriot missiles and other advanced munitions.

The move has shaken Ukrainian officials and sparked renewed fears about whether the U.S. may scale back its military support altogether. Kremlin officials, however, welcomed the pause.

“The fewer weapons sent to Ukraine, the sooner this conflict will end,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on July 2.

The call also comes as U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to broker peace in Ukraine remain stalled. Trump and Putin last spoke on June 14, a conversation that largely focused on escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

According to AFP, Putin’s reference to eliminating “root causes” of the conflict reflects Moscow’s longstanding demands, including the demilitarization and “de-Nazification” of Ukraine, protection of Russian-speaking communities in Donbas, opposition to NATO expansion, and Kyiv’s neutrality.

Russia has long cited Ukraine’s 2019 constitutional commitment to pursue NATO membership as a major security threat. Moscow argues that the alliance’s potential deployment of troops and weapons near its border is unacceptable.
