Republican Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Withdraw U.S. from United Nations

Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, introduced a bill on February 20 seeking to completely withdraw the United States from the United Nations (U.N.), arguing that the organization has become a platform for "attacking America and its allies."

The proposed legislation, titled the "American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2025," would terminate U.S. membership in the U.N. and its affiliated agencies, while also cutting off all U.S. funding to the organization. Additionally, the bill prohibits the executive branch from rejoining the U.N. or any of its agencies without Senate approval.

Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, co-sponsored the bill, stating that the U.N. has "become a forum for tyrants and a tool for undermining America." Representative Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, is set to introduce a similar measure in the House of Representatives, claiming that the U.N. "fails to serve American interests" and instead "empowers America's adversaries while attacking our allies."

"The U.N. benefits from American taxpayer dollars yet consistently undermines our interests, emboldens our enemies, and fails to prevent wars, genocide, human rights abuses, and pandemics," Rep. Roy said. He also pointed to UNRWA, the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, which has faced scrutiny after reports alleged that some of its employees were involved in Hamas’s attack on Israel in late 2023. The U.S. suspended funding to UNRWA in January 2024.

The U.N. has not yet responded to the lawmakers' comments. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. is the U.N.'s largest financial contributor, providing over $18 billion in 2022—nearly one-third of its total budget.

It remains uncertain how much support the bill will gain in Congress. Similar proposals, such as the "American Sovereignty Restoration Act," have repeatedly failed due to insufficient backing. While Republicans hold a majority in both the House and Senate, their margin is narrow.

Former President Donald Trump has not commented on the bill but has previously criticized the U.N. and suggested withdrawing the U.S. from the organization. On February 4, he signed an executive order pulling the U.S. out of the U.N. Human Rights Council and reaffirmed the freeze on UNRWA funding.
