Republicans Clash Over Fiscal Fallout of Trump’s Mega-Bill
A sweeping budget proposal backed by former President Donald Trump is dividing Republicans, with lawmakers trading accusations over how much the bill could deepen America’s national deficit.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and several GOP lawmakers estimate that the so-called “mega-bill” could add up to $3.8 trillion to the U.S. deficit over the next decade. But House Speaker Mike Johnson pushed back on June 1, arguing that those projections are based on flawed economic assumptions.
The bill combines major tax cuts with increased spending on border security, rollbacks on Medicaid eligibility, and the elimination of clean energy tax credits. While the CBO has flagged it as a long-term deficit risk, Johnson claims the forecast assumes “sluggish economic growth” and insists the plan would stimulate the economy if passed by July 4.
Russ Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget under Trump, echoed Johnson’s view, saying the bill could reduce the deficit by as much as $1.4 trillion over time.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also dismissed the CBO’s estimates, arguing they don’t account for expected revenue gains from tariffs. “We’re going to bring the deficit down gradually,” Bessent said.
But not all Republicans are on board. Senator Rand Paul criticized the projections and the bill’s scale, calling the math unrealistic.
“They’re asking for way too much money,” Paul said. “At the end of the day, the real measure is how much more debt they’ll need to borrow. This bill adds around $5 trillion over just two years. That’s staggering.”
Trump has described the legislation as “big and beautiful,” touting it as the fiscal foundation for his second-term agenda. But independent analysts warn it could add between $3 trillion and $5 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years—overshadowing even the deep budget cuts proposed by the Directorate of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Elon Musk, the former head of DOGE, has voiced disappointment with the bill and quietly exited the administration after his term as a special government employee expired. He previously expressed concerns that the proposal undermines efforts to rein in federal spending.
The bill narrowly passed the House by a 215-214 vote but now faces stiff resistance in the Senate, where several Republicans remain skeptical. Musk also reiterated that the legislation could derail DOGE’s work and worsen the nation’s long-term fiscal health.
