Russia, U.S. Discuss 'Next Steps' in Ukraine Conflict
The Russian and U.S. foreign ministers held a phone call to discuss the "next steps" in efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine, according to official statements from both sides.
"Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his U.S. counterpart Marco Rubio discussed specific aspects of the agreements reached during their meeting in Saudi Arabia on February 18. Both sides agreed to stay in contact," the Kremlin announced today, adding that the call was made at Washington’s request.
The Kremlin’s statement notably did not mention the 30-day ceasefire proposal that the U.S. put forward earlier this week.
Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, said that Secretary Rubio and Minister Lavrov discussed "next steps" related to Ukraine. "Both sides also agreed to continue efforts to restore direct communication between the U.S. and Russia," Bruce stated.
On February 12, President Donald Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. The two nations then held high-level talks in Saudi Arabia on February 18, marking the first direct negotiations between Moscow and Washington since the conflict erupted in February 2022.
On March 11, U.S. officials met with Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia, where Kyiv agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Washington. The ceasefire would take effect immediately if Russia accepted and could be extended beyond 30 days.
On March 13, Putin signaled his support for ceasefire talks but insisted that any agreement must lead to long-term peace and address the root causes of the conflict. The Kremlin also hinted at the need for further discussions with President Trump before finalizing any agreement.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of delaying negotiations, saying on March 15 that Moscow was trying to strengthen its battlefield position before agreeing to a ceasefire.
