Russia Accuses Europe of ‘Fueling the Fire’ in Ukraine Conflict

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused European nations of escalating the Ukraine conflict, claiming they are provoking Kyiv and pushing for a peacekeeping deployment.

"They are inciting Ukraine to continue hostilities by saying that peace in the current situation is worse than war—just as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen put it," Lavrov said at a press conference in Qatar on February 26.

Europe’s Warnings About a Risky Peace Deal

Earlier, Frederiksen had warned that while a ceasefire in Ukraine is desirable, Kyiv faces the danger of a peace deal that could be "more dangerous than war" due to uncertainty created by the U.S. negotiations with Russia.

Lavrov claimed Europe is "pouring fuel on the fire" instead of addressing the root causes of the conflict.

He pointed to ongoing European military aid for Ukraine and proposals from the UK and France to deploy a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine as evidence of this approach.

"The most effective way to resolve this conflict is to understand its core causes," Lavrov stated.

He also referenced recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who blamed NATO expansion and attempts to integrate Ukraine into the alliance as a major factor behind the war—a stance similar to Russia’s long-standing narrative.

Russia: Europe Is ‘Lying’ About Peace Talks

Lavrov accused Europe of dishonesty, saying that claims that Russia refuses to engage in Ukraine peace talks are false.

"Europe’s approach to this conflict is outdated and doomed to fail," he said.

His remarks came after Politico reported last week that the EU is preparing at least a €6 billion ($6.3 billion) military aid package for Ukraine. Sources familiar with the matter suggested the amount could rise to €10 billion as EU members reassess their stockpiles.

Russia has long criticized Western arms shipments to Ukraine, arguing they only prolong the war without changing its outcome.

Trump’s Push for a Peace Deal with Russia

Since taking office, Trump has moved swiftly to broker an end to the Ukraine conflict.

He recently held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which they agreed to "immediately accelerate" peace negotiations.

Senior U.S. and Russian delegations met in Saudi Arabia earlier this month to discuss bilateral relations and the Ukraine conflict.

Europe Alarmed by U.S.-Russia Negotiations

Trump’s direct engagement with Russia has shocked Ukraine and its European allies, effectively breaking Moscow’s diplomatic isolation—something the West has tried to enforce over the past three years.
