The Kremlin States Putin is Willing to Discuss Ukraine Conflict with Trump but Unwilling to Alter Moscow's Demands
During a press conference on November 8, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was asked if President Putin's willingness to discuss the Ukraine conflict with President-elect Trump signaled a potential change in Moscow's demands.
"President Putin has never indicated any change in the goals of the special military operation in Ukraine. On the contrary, he has repeatedly stated that Moscow's objectives remain unchanged," Peskov replied. "All of these goals pertain to the national security interests and the well-being of the Russian people, meaning there will be no discussion of altering our stated objectives." On June 14, President Putin reiterated the conditions for ending the conflict, which include Ukraine abandoning its ambitions to join NATO and withdrawing all troops from the four regions that Russia claims to have annexed.
Ukraine has rejected these demands, asserting that they are tantamount to surrender. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a "victory plan" that includes calls for additional military aid from the West.
Republican candidate Donald Trump was elected President of the United States on November 6 and is set to return to the White House in January 2025. Trump has claimed he could bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours but has not provided detailed plans. The Kremlin welcomed Trump's idea but noted that "only time will reveal" whether the future U.S. president will act on this promise.
On November 7, President Putin congratulated Trump and expressed readiness for dialogue with the incoming administration. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that President Putin could hold a phone conversation with President-elect Trump before the January 20, 2025, inauguration.
Russia-U.S. relations are currently at a historic low. The last time President Putin spoke with President Biden was in February 2022, just days before the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
