Russia expressed skepticism about whether Donald Trump can help resolve the Ukraine conflict, stating that "only time will tell" following his confirmation as the U.S. president-elect.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on November 6 that Donald Trump had previously expressed his desire to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict during his presidential campaign. However, "only time will reveal" whether the incoming U.S. president will genuinely take action.
"Let's not forget that we are talking about an unfriendly nation, one indirectly opposing us in the war in Ukraine," Peskov stated.
The Kremlin spokesperson also mentioned that he had "no information" regarding any congratulations sent by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Trump, adding that Moscow-Washington relations are at a historic low. "We have repeatedly said that the U.S. has the potential to contribute to ending this conflict. It cannot be achieved overnight, but the U.S. has the ability to shift the direction of its foreign policy. We will see if and how that happens after the new president's inauguration in January 2025," he emphasized.
Russia's Foreign Ministry stressed that it harbors no illusions about Donald Trump, vowing to fiercely protect its national interests and focus on achieving all objectives in Ukraine. "Our conditions remain unchanged, and Washington is well aware of that," the ministry stated. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Trump on his "impressive victory" and expressed hope that the new U.S. administration would bring peace to Ukraine.
"I appreciate President Trump's commitment to a 'peace through strength' approach in global affairs. This is precisely the principle that can truly bring about a fair peace in Ukraine," Zelensky declared, expressing a desire to personally congratulate Trump and discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz extended his congratulations to Trump, expressing hope that Berlin and Washington would continue to work together to "promote success, prosperity, and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic."
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni noted the close relationship between Italy and the U.S., underpinned by shared values and historical friendship, and expressed hope for further strengthening bilateral ties.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted a photo with Donald Trump at the White House during his first term, stating that the friendship between the U.S. and Canada makes the world "envious." "I know that together, President Trump and I will work to create more opportunities, bring greater prosperity, and ensure security for both our nations," Trudeau wrote.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his message to Trump, expressed a desire to closely collaborate with the U.S. during South Africa's presidency of the G20 next year.
U.S. media projected Donald Trump's victory after he secured more than the 270 electoral votes needed to win. He becomes the second president in U.S. history to serve two non-consecutive terms. In a speech to supporters early on November 6, Trump declared that he "made history."
