Moscow has warned that U.S.-Russia relations are nearing a critical breaking point, signaling a hardline stance toward the Trump administration.
At a February 10 press conference in Moscow, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that tensions between Washington and Moscow remain dangerously high.
"The Biden administration focused on hybrid warfare, embedding the idea of Russia’s strategic defeat into official documents and imposing this stance on its allies. As a result, U.S.-Russia confrontation has escalated significantly and remains at a critical level," Ryabkov said.
The concept of Russia’s “strategic defeat” emerged after the war in Ukraine, with the U.S. and its allies seeing the conflict as an opportunity to cripple Moscow’s military and economic power.
However, Ryabkov argued that the war will continue unless Ukraine withdraws from Russian-controlled territories and abandons its NATO aspirations. He also claimed there has been no shift in U.S. policy toward Ukraine, despite Trump’s recent efforts to negotiate peace.
"We must recognize the realities on the ground and not ignore the root causes that forced Russia to launch its special military operation in Ukraine. Half-measures are not something we are prepared to accept," Ryabkov stated.
Trump-Putin Phone Call and Russia’s Response
Ryabkov’s remarks came just a day after President Donald Trump revealed that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Ukraine conflict. This marked the first known conversation between the two leaders since the war began in February 2022.
However, despite Trump’s efforts to restart dialogue, Ryabkov suggested that Russia remains skeptical about the U.S. approach under the new administration.
"In U.S. domestic and foreign policy, Russia is officially treated as a ‘major enemy,’" Ryabkov said.
While Trump’s team has shown interest in re-establishing communication with Moscow, Ryabkov noted that no agreements have been reached regarding high-level diplomatic talks.
"A political resolution can only be achieved if all conditions laid out by President Putin in June 2024 are met," Ryabkov added, referring to Putin’s past criticism of U.S. policies and its "imperial ambitions."
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to confirm or deny whether Trump and Putin had spoken.
The White House and U.S. State Department have not yet commented on Ryabkov’s statements.
