The Kremlin has cautioned that the United States will further escalate tensions if it allows Ukraine to deploy long-range missiles to strike targets within Russian territory.
"It is evident that the outgoing administration in Washington intends to add fuel to the fire and exacerbate tensions even further," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated today.
His comments came in response to media reports citing unnamed U.S. officials on November 17, suggesting that the Biden administration has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range weapons to strike deep within Russian territory. The first such attack could occur in the coming days, potentially involving ATACMS ballistic missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers.
"If such a decision is indeed made, it will undoubtedly lead to a new spiral of escalation and reveal a new level of U.S. involvement in the conflict," Peskov warned. He emphasized that Russia has clearly communicated its position on this issue to Western countries, asserting that Moscow would view any attacks on Russian territory carried out with weapons supplied to Ukraine as acts sanctioned by these countries.
"This fundamentally changes the way they are involved in the conflict. Such a move is dangerous and highly provocative," he added.
In September, President Vladimir Putin stated that Western authorization for Ukraine to use long-range weapons against Russia would equate to the U.S. and NATO directly entering the conflict in Ukraine. He cautioned that this would alter the nature of the war, compelling Russia to take appropriate countermeasures against such threats.
The Russian leader emphasized that Ukraine could not strike deep within Russian territory without Western support, as such operations would require satellite intelligence and reconnaissance flights.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long called on the U.S. and Western allies to allow the use of long-range weapons against targets inside Russian territory.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot indicated today that Paris remains open to considering this option. "We have publicly stated that this is a possibility we are willing to consider if the targets are positions used by the Russians to launch attacks on Ukrainian territory," Barrot said.
France and the United Kingdom have provided Ukraine with Storm Shadow/SCALP long-range missiles but have not authorized their use against targets within Russian territory without similar moves from the U.S.
