Two Russian oil tankers were involved in an accident due to rough seas off the coast of Crimea, resulting in one sailor's death and an oil spill.
"The oil tankers Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 encountered difficulties due to a storm in the Black Sea. The incident has caused an oil spill emergency," Russia's Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport stated in a press release today.
Russian authorities reported that the Volgoneft 212, a 136-meter-long vessel built in 1969, broke in half during the storm and ran aground, with part of its bow submerged. Meanwhile, the Volgoneft 239, a 132-meter-long ship launched in 1973, drifted after sustaining damage in the storm.
Both tankers have a carrying capacity of over 4,000 tons of oil products. The two vessels issued distress signals while in the Kerch Strait, located between the Crimean Peninsula and mainland Russia. Local authorities dispatched two tugboats, two helicopters, and more than 50 rescue personnel to the scene.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the establishment of a task force led by Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev to coordinate rescue operations and address the oil spill.
The Federal Agency for Maritime Transport reported that the Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 had 15 and 14 crew members, respectively. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations provided slightly different numbers, stating there were 13 and 14 crew members, later confirming that 13 sailors had been evacuated from the first ship, but one had died.
The extent of the oil spill remains unclear, but the Federal Agency for Maritime Transport announced that "measures are being taken to manage the incident."
Russia's Southern Transport Prosecutor's Office has launched an inspection into compliance with maritime safety regulations. Meanwhile, the Crimea branch of the Russian Federal Investigative Committee has initiated criminal investigations into alleged "violations of safety regulations in maritime traffic operations."
