Spanish Citizens Protest Against Government Following Historic Flood

Tens of thousands of Spaniards took to the streets to express outrage at the government's response to a historic flood that claimed over 200 lives.

Protests erupted across various cities in Spain on November 10, with around 130,000 people marching through Valencia, a region in the country's east. Demonstrators repeatedly chanted slogans accusing officials of being "murderers" and carried banners criticizing the leadership of Valencia's regional president as well as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

The protests began at the main square outside Valencia's city hall and continued toward the regional government headquarters. Clashes broke out in several areas between protesters and security forces. Valencia was the hardest-hit region in last month's devastating flood, recording at least 212 of the total 220 deaths. Many towns and cities in the area remain submerged in mud and debris.

Locals are furious that officials failed to issue timely flood warnings, leaving them unable to evacuate in time. Some residents reported receiving alerts only after their vehicles were already swept away by floodwaters. They have also voiced anger over what they perceive as the government's slow response in addressing the aftermath of the disaster.

Several protesters harshly criticized Valencia’s regional president, Carlos Mazon, 50, who, alongside King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and other senior officials, was pelted with mud by locals during a recent visit to the flood-affected areas.

"Mazon's management is a disgrace, and he should resign. Hours before the flooding began, they should have warned people not to take their children to school, not to go to work," said Julian Garcia, a 75-year-old protester. Many Valencia residents believe the central government also bears responsibility. While waiting for aid, citizens have been left to handle the flood's destruction on their own, often repeating the slogan that has gained traction in recent weeks: "Only the people save the people."
