Suspected Gunman Found Dead After Sniper Ambush on U.S. Firefighters in Idaho
COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO — Authorities have located the body of the man believed to have ambushed and fatally shot two wildland firefighters in a sniper-style attack amid ongoing firefighting efforts in northern Idaho.
Late Saturday, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office announced that SWAT team members discovered the suspect’s body near a rifle on Canfield Mountain—the same area where the deadly shooting took place earlier in the day. The suspect’s identity and motive have not yet been released.
Investigators believe the man intentionally set the wildfire on Canfield Mountain to lure first responders into an ambush. Once firefighters arrived, he allegedly opened fire with a high-powered rifle from a concealed position, killing two of them.
Initial reports suggested there may have been multiple shooters, but authorities later determined the attack was likely carried out by a lone gunman. With the suspect deceased, law enforcement has lifted shelter-in-place orders for nearby residents.
The wildfire remains active and uncontained as of Sunday. Fire crews are continuing to battle the blaze under heightened security.
Idaho Governor Brad Little called the incident a “brutal, targeted assault on courageous public servants,” and praised law enforcement and emergency personnel for their swift response. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been briefed on the attack.
This marks one of the most violent assaults on U.S. firefighters in recent memory, adding to a growing list of firearm-related tragedies amid wildfire season.
