President Donald Trump, known for his criticism of California and its Democratic governor Gavin Newsom, stunned many on January 24 by embracing the ambitious governor during a visit to Los Angeles following devastating wildfires, Politico reports.
The Hollywood-style hug, reminiscent of the embrace between New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and President Barack Obama after Hurricane Sandy, came just hours after a last-minute White House invitation to the leader of the most populous U.S. state.
And Trump appeared entirely at ease.
The president led Newsom to meet the gathered press, where the two pledged to collaborate on rebuilding efforts for Los Angeles.
"We’ll need your help. You’ve stood by us through COVID-19. I haven’t forgotten that, and I look forward to working together for a swift recovery," Newsom said.
Trump agreed.
"We’ve got to get this done," the president said. "So many lives have been impacted—so much property destroyed," he continued. "This is something maybe no one has seen before. Almost like since World War II, wouldn’t you say? I mean, nothing like this has happened, and we’ll fix it... permanently, so it can’t happen again."
A History of Clashes
Trump and Newsom have sparred over numerous issues. The California Democrat has been one of Trump’s fiercest critics during the 2024 presidential campaign, with the president frequently turning Newsom into a rhetorical punching bag during rallies, complete with unflattering nicknames.
Despite their clashes, the two have collaborated during crises, including natural disasters during Trump’s first term.
On the way to Los Angeles aboard Air Force One, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters, "President Trump is always willing to work with anyone to solve problems for the American people."
"But it’s no secret that Gavin Newsom hasn’t acted in the best interest of his state," she added.
Unity in the Aftermath
At Los Angeles International Airport on January 24, Trump suggested to Newsom that the two should talk further. Previously, Trump had said California must adopt voter ID requirements and follow his directives on water policy to qualify for disaster aid—policies that clashed with Newsom’s Democratic agenda.
But on the tarmac, there were smiles all around. Trump, dressed in a suit and a black MAGA hat, appeared alongside a casually dressed Newsom.
"We’re working to get something done," Trump said. "He’s the governor of this state, and we’re going to make it happen. They’re going to need a lot of federal help." Turning to Newsom, Trump asked, "Unless you don’t need any help?"
Newsom responded, "We’re going to need a lot of federal help."
