The Turbulent First Week of President Trump’s New Term

President Donald Trump wasted no time launching an ambitious far-right agenda during his first days back in office, sparking both fervent support and fierce backlash.

Last week, Stewart Rhodes, sentenced to 18 years for seditious conspiracy in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, was serving his sentence behind bars. Yet, by January 22, just two days after Trump’s inauguration, Rhodes appeared at the Capitol wearing a “Trump 2020” hat, casually seated at a Dunkin’ Donuts.

With a few bold executive actions, Trump initiated a political revolution: deploying troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, challenging birthright citizenship, reversing policies on diversity and inclusion, pulling back from the fight against climate change, and pardoning violent offenders who supported him.

The 45th and 47th President of the United States set the tone for his return to power with sweeping decisions designed to energize his base and reshape the nation. His actions, described by some as monarchical, also provoked significant legal challenges and political uproar.

A Storm of Policies

Tara Setmayer, a former Republican communications director, warned of the transformative impact of Trump’s agenda. "He’s igniting a far-right movement that the American public may not be prepared to confront," she said. "Americans must decide whether to halt this march into extremism under Trump and his allies."

On January 20, moments after taking the oath of office, Trump delivered a scathing inaugural address targeting his predecessor, Joe Biden, seated just feet away. He denounced "corrupt elites" and the federal government’s failure to provide basic services for disaster-stricken Americans.

“The decline of America is over,” Trump declared, despite inheriting a strong economy and reduced illegal border crossings. His speech energized MAGA supporters who flocked to Washington, even as the city remained a Democratic stronghold.

At a packed arena, attendees witnessed tech mogul Elon Musk, now head of the "Department of Government Efficiency," raise his hand in what some interpreted as a fascist-style salute. Trump then signed a flurry of executive orders with far-reaching consequences.

Among them was a declaration of a national emergency at the southern border, imposing a broad asylum ban, directing the Pentagon to prioritize border security, and expanding detention facilities. The administration announced plans to deploy 1,500 troops to the border and suspend refugee admissions.

Trump also signed an order ending birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to non-citizen or undocumented parents. However, on January 23, a federal judge blocked the measure, calling it “unconstitutional.”

In his first week, Trump reignited culture wars by abolishing federal diversity and inclusion programs, ordering agencies to recognize only two genders—male and female—and banning the use of preferred pronouns in official documents. He also reinstated a controversial executive order, "Schedule F," which makes tens of thousands of federal employees more vulnerable to dismissal.

He declared a national energy emergency to expand fossil fuel production, rolled back regulations, and abandoned electric vehicle initiatives. Trump also withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement and began the process of leaving the World Health Organization, accusing it of mishandling global health crises.

The Most Controversial Move

The most divisive action of Trump’s first week was his mass pardon of approximately 1,500 supporters involved in the January 6 Capitol attack. Among them were over 250 individuals convicted of assaulting police officers, using weapons like flagpoles, hockey sticks, crutches, and stun guns.

Jacob Chansley, the "QAnon Shaman," who stormed the Capitol adorned with face paint and a horned headdress, celebrated his pardon on social media: "I’m free. Thank you, Mr. President! Time to buy some guns."

This unprecedented move shattered norms and undermined what had been the largest investigation in the Department of Justice’s history. While some Republican senators criticized Trump’s decision, many either supported it or remained silent, acknowledging Trump’s overwhelming political influence.

In a Fox News interview, Trump dismissed the Capitol violence as "very minor incidents" and portrayed the participants as patriots. Critics question whether his policy blitz will result in lasting change or prove to be a short-lived political spectacle.

A Moment or a Movement?

“This is clearly a far-right revolution, consolidating his political base while exploiting opposition chaos. But is it a movement or just a fleeting outburst? We’ll have to see,” said pollster John Zogby.

Despite the momentum, experts doubt Trump’s political revolution can endure. He faces challenges from Republican divisions in Congress, a demanding MAGA base, and a public expecting quick results. Trump’s first term was marred by chaos, impulsiveness, and an aversion to policy detail.

“Trump is a loud but impatient leader. He loves grand speeches and flashy announcements but loses interest in the hard work of governance,” said Larry Jacobs, director of the Center for Political Studies at the University of Minnesota. “This is a radical right-wing agenda, but let’s see how far he gets.”

Jacobs dismissed the notion that Trump’s reelection signals a permanent shift in America’s political landscape. “America isn’t a far-right nation. As Trump’s policies take effect and backlash grows, public opinion will shift significantly. By summer, his approval ratings will likely plummet.”

“Resistance in Congress will grow. Republicans will start focusing on the 2026 election and distancing themselves from Trump. This is a rare and fleeting moment for him,” Jacobs concluded.
