The U.S. has approved a $2 billion arms deal for Taiwan, which includes air defense systems like NASAMS, 123 missiles worth $1.16 billion, and radar systems valued at $828 million, according to the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency on October 25.
The Pentagon stated the deal would enhance Taiwan's security, support political stability, and maintain the region's military balance. NASAMS is a new asset for Taiwan, with only Australia and Indonesia currently operating it in the region.
Taiwan welcomed the decision, while Beijing has yet to comment. China has frequently criticized U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, viewing them as a threat to regional peace and stability. The deal comes amid ongoing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, with China recently conducting military drills near the island, signaling a strong deterrent against Taiwan's independence efforts.
China considers Taiwan a province awaiting reunification, preferring peaceful means but not ruling out force if necessary.
