The House investigation team published a report highlighting "critical security failures" that led to the assassination attempt on Trump in July.
"The investigation team gathered substantial evidence showing that the tragic and shocking events of July 13 could have been prevented," said the bipartisan group in their preliminary report on October 21.
The 50-page report, released by seven Republican and six Democratic members, follows the first phase of the investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. The lawmakers concluded that the U.S. Secret Service and other protection forces displayed "clear shortcomings in planning and coordination" for the event. The Secret Service "failed to provide clear instructions" to local police regarding outer perimeter security, which was outside the agency's direct control.
The Secret Service and police forces also did not hold a coordination meeting on the morning of July 13 before Trump arrived at Butler for his outdoor speech. There was no "unified command center" to ensure smooth communication during the rally.
The preliminary report indicated that "disjointed communication channels" allowed suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks to evade detection and reach his shooting position. The building where the suspect hid was considered "risky," but security did not check the crowd or the area.
"Federal, state, and local officials encountered Thomas Matthew Crooks at several key moments but failed to detect the plot and stop the suspect in time," the report stated.
According to the investigation team, these "critical failures" led to security breaches in Butler, allowing Crooks to fire multiple shots, killing one attendee and injuring the former president's ear.
Over the past three months, the investigation team gathered information from various House committees, conducted 23 witness interviews with officials in Pennsylvania and local agencies. A complete report, along with recommendations for the U.S. government to prevent future security incidents, is expected on December 13.
