U.S. military bases are facing significant challenges in dealing with drones, which are difficult to trace and subject to numerous restrictive regulations.
General Mark Kelly, commander of the U.S. Air Combat Command, has been grappling with reports of suspicious drones regularly appearing over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, home to top national security facilities. Drones have also been spotted near other key sites, such as SEAL Team 6’s base and the world’s largest naval base in Norfolk.
Officials are unsure if these drones are operated by hobbyists or foreign adversaries like Russia or China. U.S. law prohibits shooting down drones unless they pose an immediate threat, making it difficult for military personnel to respond. Some lawmakers are pushing to relax these rules.
Drones were first spotted near Langley in December 2023, prompting discussions at the White House and with U.S. intelligence agencies. Despite multiple attempts to intercept them, tracking the drones has proven nearly impossible.
The Pentagon remains concerned about the growing threat posed by drones, as they could be used for espionage or attacks. However, destroying them in U.S. airspace poses risks to public safety. Though the drone incursions stopped after December 23, 2023, authorities continue to investigate the incidents.
